In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the Apostle Paul uses the
term “mystery” (mysterion in Greek) to refer to divine truths that
were previously hidden but have now been revealed through Christ and the
Gospel. These mysteries are central to Paul’s teachings, particularly in
his epistles. Below is a list of the key mysteries Paul speaks about,
along with supporting verses from his letters:

1. The Mystery of God’s Plan for the Gentiles

  • Ephesians 3:4-6 (KJV):
“By which, when ye read, ye may perceive my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel.”
  • Colossians 1:26-27 (KJV):
“Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
  • Explanation: The inclusion of Gentiles as equal heirs with Jews
in God’s kingdom through faith in Christ was a hidden truth now revealed.

2. The Mystery of the Gospel

  • Romans 16:25-26 (KJV):
“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith.”
  • 1 Corinthians 2:7 (KJV):
“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the ages for our glory.”
  • This refers to the revelation of Christ and the gospel as the central
    mystery of God’s plan.

3. The Mystery of the Church

  • Ephesians 3:9-10 (KJV):
“And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.”
  • Ephesians 5:32 (KJV):
“This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
  • Paul reveals that the unity of Jews and Gentiles in one body (the
    Church) is a divine mystery.

4. The Mystery of Godliness

  • 1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV):
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
  • This refers to the incarnation and work of Jesus Christ as the
    foundation of true godliness.

5. The Mystery of the Rapture

  • 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (KJV):
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
  • This speaks of the sudden transformation and resurrection of
    believers at Christ’s return.

6. The Mystery of Lawlessness

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (KJV):
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.”
  • Paul warns about the presence and growth of evil in the world, which
will culminate in the revelation of the Antichrist.

7. The Mystery of Christ’s Indwelling

  • Colossians 1:26-27 (KJV):
“Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
  • This emphasizes the profound truth that Christ dwells within
    believers.

These mysteries reveal God’s plan, wisdom, and work through Jesus Christ,
often focusing on the unity of Jews and Gentiles, the Church, and the
ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom. Paul uses the term “mystery” to
highlight truths that were previously hidden but are now revealed in
Christ.
